Oktoberfest dates back as far as 1810 when it was first celebrated in Munich in honor of Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities kicked off on October 12, 1810, and continued for nearly a week, culminating in an exhilarating horse race on October 17. After such a remarkable celebration, the newlyweds decided that this kind of festival should become an annual tradition. In the years that followed, the festivities were repeated each October and eventually shifted to start in September.
Oktoberfest holds the title of the world's largest beer festival, with over 6 million liters of Bavarian beer enjoyed during its 17 or 18-day celebration. To put it in perspective, that's equivalent to about 1 million gallons of beer!
Grab your beer steins, your bratwurst, your pretzels, and prepare for Saturday 21st September – Sunday 6th October 2024.
Shifting the festival to late September has taken advantage of more favorable weather in Bavaria's unpredictable climate. With warmer September nights, visitors can fully enjoy the outdoor beer gardens and fairgrounds with carnival rides. Traditionally, Oktoberfest's final weekend extends into the first week of October. The festival kicks off on a late September weekend and spans three weekends. Who knows, we might even be able to enjoy a longer summer, right here in the UK! Here’s hoping.
