The History of the European Championship (Euro)

Although the first European Championship took place in 1960, the concept originated much earlier. In 1927, Henri Delaunay, an administrator with the French Football Federation, proposed a pan-European football tournament. Despite later becoming UEFA's first General Secretary, Delaunay had passed away before the tournament's inception. The trophy for the championship was named in his honor.

Henri Delaunay

The Henri Delaunay trophy features a figure of a juggling boy on the back and the inscriptions "Championnat d'Europe" and "Coupe Henri Delaunay" on the front. In 2008, it was redesigned to be larger and more aligned with UEFA's modern trophies. The new version, made of sterling silver, weighs 8 kilograms (18 lbs) and stands 60 centimeters (24 inches) tall, with the names of winning countries engraved on the back.

Most Wins

Germany and Spain are the most successful nations in the tournament's history, each with three titles. Spain is the only country to have successfully defended its title, achieving this in 2012. Germany holds records for the most matches played (53), goals scored (75), and victories (28). France, in 1984, is the only nation to have won all of its matches in a tournament (5 out of 5). In 1992, Denmark won the championship with only two victories in five games.

The last tournament was in 2020, when England faced Italy. Despite a valiant effort, England was edged out in the penalty shootout, resulting in Italy's victory. Here's to the boys of 2024!!
